Maastricht Debate 2019

Brand identity and promotion for the headline debate between the lead candidates for the European Commission presidency - livestreamed by POLITICO and watched by 200,000 people.

Maastricht Debate 2019

The moment

On 29 April 2019, five lead candidates for the European Commission presidency - Frans Timmermans, Guy Verhofstadt, Bas Eickhout, Violeta Tomić and Jan Zahradil - faced off in Maastricht on the future of Europe, in front of 500 young people and international media.

My role

I developed the brand identity for the debate and coordinated its promotion, in a partnership with YouTube. The event was co-organised with Maastricht University and Studio Europa Maastricht, alongside the City of Maastricht, the Province of Limburg, the European Youth Forum and the European Journalism Centre.

The format

Moderated by Rianne Letschert (rector, Maastricht University) and POLITICO's Ryan Heath, candidates had 90 seconds per answer across three themes sourced from a Maastricht University survey: Digital Europe, Future of Europe and Sustainable Europe. The audience voted Frans Timmermans best debater.

The reach

POLITICO Europe livestreamed the debate. Over 50 universities and organisations across Europe hosted watch parties; 133,500 people watched live, growing to 200,000 views - with a live viewing party in Maastricht running from food trucks and photobooths to an aftershow analysis and silent disco.
